Final Reflection
Due to the demands of the business world in today's climate it is imperative one master the skill of business writing. The University of North Carolina, Wilmington offers an interactive online course that teaches and promotes this practice.
Dr. Lance Cummings is the professor of English 312, Writing for
Business in which one of the main outcomes for me was to learn to write
rhetorically using ethos- an ethical appeal, pathos- an emotional
appeal and logos- a logical appeal. The essential elements of business
writing are audience, purpose, context and message. These were all put
into practice during this course and especially while participating in
the ETEAL applied learning class with an emphasis on composing an
analysis report on a local brokerage, Nest Realty.
For this project students were put into collaboration groups to review, assess and suggest improvements
to the social media presence of a Wilmington real estate
company.Collaboration is never easy and my group faced many challenges
in time, Internet availability and connecting to each other. We solved
all the initial hurdles and submitted what I believe was a well written and informative analysis.
In our report we went over all the places in social media where Nest
had a presence. These included Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and their
own web site. We identified a missing web link and made productive
suggestions as to how, from a consumer point of view, their social media
presence could be enhanced.
Through this project I gained valuable Internet skills and learned a lot about social media platforms that I was unaware of.
On the whole I have enjoyed learning form my professor and my fellow
students and feel I have contributed to improving a company's online
presence.I learned to better navigate the Internet and greatly improved
my business writing skills. The experience will follow me through my
life and ant business opportunities that I face in the future.
